Cosmetic Nose Surgery

Nose surgery serves two functions, which are cosmetic and functional. Cosmetic Nose Surgery, also known as Rhinoplasty, is an elective procedure that can alter the size or shape of the nose. It can also be used to change features of the nostrils. The primary goal of this procedure is to provide symmetrical balance of the nose in comparison to the facial structure. The focus is to change the appearance of the nose because the nose is the most distinguishable feature of the face. Rhinoplasty can give the ability to change the profile of an individual’s face. There are two main ways that the surgery is performed. One is through having an incision done inside the nostrils, which has the capability to make the procedure seem invisible. The other is through having a small incision on the skin attached to your septum where it divides your nostrils. This opens up the inside of the nostrils providing more visibility to the surgeon and providing a greater access to the nose. These two methods try to focus on creating the least amount of scarring as possible. The surgery ultimately may help the self-image of an individual and can give them a boost of confidence. Cosmetic nose surgery is one of the most common procedures performed in New York City.

Functional Nose Surgery

In functional nose surgery, the main purpose is to correct a medical condition such as a deviated nasal septum or to repair damage suffered to the nose from an injury. In some cases, this surgery is used to correct a previous Rhinoplasty surgery that either healed poorly or caused additional damage. Another reason an individual might undergo a functional nose surgery is because of breathing issues through the nose. An obstruction in your nasal passage can make normal behaviors difficult such as breathing from your nose, sleeping and eating. One of the common causes for trouble breathing through your nose is a deviated septum. A deviated septum is when the septum is not correctly sitting between both nasal passageways and causes airflow to be obstructed out of one or both nasal passages. There are procedures available to help correct a deviated septum. One of the procedures is called septoplasty. A septoplasty is a procedure that corrects and straightens the septum to help you breathe better and increase the normal function of your nose. Functional nose surgery is an option to correct medical issues an individual may have with their nose.

Combination Nose Surgery

In some cases of nose surgery, a patient may desire both cosmetic and functional changes to the nose. Functional Rhinoplasty Surgery is a procedure that can serve more than one purpose.  The primary focus in functional Rhinoplasty surgery is to restore normal breathing in the nasal passages while improving the appearance of the nose. The physical appearance of the nose may also need to be changed when performing surgery to correct breathing issues. The sides of the nose may need to be widened to allow for more airflow to pass through them. This type of nose surgery that requires a combination of both cosmetic and functional changes .is frequently performed in New York City.  Each patient has a unique situation and based on their case there are various solutions available in order to accommodate both medical and aesthetic issues.

Insurance and Nose Surgery

When it comes to insurance and nose surgery in New York City there are many options. Health insurance plans typically cover nose surgery that involves the improvement of breathing through the nasal passage or to correct damage caused by trauma. Insurance does not cover any cosmetic surgery solely for the purpose of changing the size or shape of the nose. Some nasal injuries that have both changed the  physical appearance of the nose as well as worsened breathing would be eligible for insurance to help offset or completely cover costs. The best way to determine what out of pocket costs that you will have to pay is to have a consultation with a nose surgery specialist.
