Origin Lateral zygomatic bone.
Insertion Modiolus and skin/muscle at the oral commissure.
Action Elevates and draws the oral commissure superolaterally.
Role in smiling Principal dynamic elevator of the oral commissure during smiling.
Weakness pattern Reduced superolateral commissure excursion and smile asymmetry toward the stronger side. Anatomic variability Anatomic studies demonstrate variable zygomatic-versus-buccal branch supply; the weights are an educational overlap model, not a patient-specific prediction.
