Obstructive Sleep Apnea is characterized by repetitive episodes of shallow or paused breathing during sleep, despite the effort to breathe. The interruptions are usually caused by the collapse of soft tissue at the back of the throat, blocking the airway. These episodes can last from a few seconds to minutes and may occur hundreds of times in one night, leading to poor sleep quality and various health risks such as cardiovascular disease, hypertension, and even cognitive impairments.
